Understanding Danish Community

When we read conventional information about Denmark we always tend to see that, Danes are cold people and in Denmark, there is hate towards minorities. But is this really true? I’ve made a survey during my stay in Denmark to just see what people actually thinks about this matter.

What Danes Thinks?

The survey consist two different part. Both part focuses on different matters about minorities and social policies about it. There is 104 participant to this survey which all of it anonymous.

Question 1:

We ask to the participant if they think different cultures improves the Danish society. Half of the participants said that they completely agree. Only %8 of the participants answered negative.

Question 2:

In this question, we asked is there enough diversity in the Danish society. Participants were tend to answer middle ground. %30 of the participants neither agree nor disagree.

Question 3:

We asked to participants that if they think native Danes are seeing different cultures as a part of Denmark. %33 of participants answered somewhat disagree.

Question 4:

In this question we asked that if they think that people from different background has same opportunities as the native ones in Denmark. The answers was similar to the previous question.

Question 5:

We asked to participants that is an immigrant from Western country gets better treatment from the society compared to an immigrant from Eastern country. Nearly half of the participants somewhat agrees.

Question 6:

We changed the last question a bit and asked if Danes are welcoming enough to the ones whose coming from Middle East. The answers were fragmented.

Question 7:

And lastly in this part, we asked the important question: Is there any hate towards the minorities? %40 of the participants somewhat agrees.

Opinions

First of all I want to share how I think after I spent 1 year in Denmark. I realized that the conventional information about Denmark and Danes are hugely wrong. Yes, they are bit cold to outsiders. Yes, they are hard to make friend. But I DO NOT accept that they are hateful towards to minorities and different cultures. I spent a whole year in Denmark and I never been in a situation that I’ve been discriminated. Danes are one of the peaceful societies I’ve ever been in. Forget what the internet says, come and see by yourself.

As the result of the survey, we can see that Danish society changes and adapt itself to this new circumstances. And when we look closely, the new “Z generation” is more pro freedom and more understanding to different cultures while the older generation is bit more conservative. The new generation thinks different, they think more globally. Yes, of course there is still hate crimes towards to minorities in the daily life and there will be. But the future is bright for Denmark.
