Hej! I’m Martina from Serbia. I did my ESC project at the AFS office as an 18+ volunteer. Together with other 18+ volunteers, I organized camps and online sessions on the topic of intercultural learning for AFS participants from all over the world.
Serbian Fredagsbar

As my solidarity project, I organized a Serbian fredagsbar at the AFS office. Fredagsbar literally means a Friday bar, and it’s the time when students or colleagues meet up on Fridays to hang out, have a drink and basically wind down from the previous week. At the AFS office, our fredagsbar committee would organize fredagsbars once a month, every time with a different theme. It is at one of these fredagsbars that we came up with an idea to organize a Serbian themed one.
For this event, I met up with the Fredagsbar committee, and they gave me some pointers on how and what to prepare. I decided to cook a few Serbian dishes, buy some Serbian snacks and provide rakija, a typical Serbian drink for everyone to try. Besides the food, I also prepared a game where everyone had to try and pronounce a Serbian word and then guess its meaning. I chose the words that had a certain cultural aspect, so that I could introduce them to my country and our culture even better. Finally, I prepared coffee in the way that we do back home, and everyone had a chance to have their fortune read from their coffee cup.
All in all, I really enjoyed organizing this event and sharing my culture with others! 🙂
