Lorenza’s Project

One year as a farmer at Kalø landbrugsskole

About the mission :

Kalø landbrugskole is an international organic farming school. All the classes are in english and a lot of students are not danish, so it was quite easy to blend in and feel integrated. As volunteer we are working at the farm of the school. The farm is here as model for the students, that’s why we are trying to have as much diversity as possible. We have animals (cows, pigs, sheep) and vegetables all year around.

I spent most of the year taking care of the vegetables while the other volunteer was taking care of the animals. My daily tasks consisted in taking care of the shop : Cleaning every day, refilling, packing, managing the stock of vegetables, if some are missing i had to go harvest it.

There was some other tasks that we were doing all year around like seeding, transplanting, weeding. In winter there was not a lot to do with vegetables so I helped a lot with the animals. The tasks are feeding them, cleaning the shit, puting straw, and in general making sure that they have everything they need. It was more physical but much more meaningful for me.

What it brought me :

Before being a volunteer i got a bachelor degree in biology and I wanted to keep going in that direction. I wanted to do a gap year volunteering in order to see a bit the world and get better in english. I can say it happened. I considerably increased my english and i met so many people from all over Europe. It was really rewarding to see all these people united by a common passion for nature. We spent so many good times with the farm team composed by young students and woofers. Working with my hands, being in the middle of nature and working with it, I realised that I belong to this world and I couldn’t imagine myself going back to my previous life. So my future plans completly changed and instead of doing a master in genetics I decided to do che ese in France. I can say this experience was life changing for me

The personnal project :

The work at the farm can be tiring especially in winter because it’s dark in Denmark. I didn’t had much energy to invest in an other project, so with my friend and colleague volunteer Andréa, we decided to do an instagram account about the farm. The aim is to show to people what is the life at the farm and what we are doing as volunteers.
