MY ESC PROJECT- Ranum Efterskole College 2024/25
An efterskole is a unique type of Danish boarding school for students aged 15–18, in 9th and 10th grade. These schools emphasize personal development, independence, and community living, alongside academic subjects. Students usually attend for one year, and it’s a popular choice in Denmark for teenagers seeking a different kind of educational experience.
Ranum Efterskole College is one of the largest and most international efterskoles in Denmark. It stands out for its wide variety of subjects, opportunities and international culture. It has incredible activities such as Sailing, Diving, Coral Restauration, Gastronomy, Fashion, Asian Cooking… and so much more!
My Responsibilities at Ranum Efterskole College
Throughout the school year, I was involved in a wide range of teaching and support roles at REC:
- Spanish Classes
I served as an assistant teacher in one of the beginner-level Spanish classes. My role included engaging students in conversations in Spanish, reading aloud to provide exposure to a native speaker, supporting them with homework, and incorporating small interactive games to keep the lessons dynamic and enjoyable. - Global Perspectives
I assisted in the Global Perspectives classes by helping students with academic writing, structuring their papers, referencing correctly, and created APA referencing materials for teachers. On several occasions, I substituted for the lead teacher and conducted full lessons independently. - Adventure
In the Adventure subject, I acted as an additional adult supervisor, prioritizing student safety and supporting the teachers during outdoor activities. I also organized small activities, such as indoor climbing and team-building games. - Outdoor Skills
Similar to Adventure, I supported students and staff during a variety of outdoor activities throughout the year, including windsurfing, mountain biking (MTB), and snorkeling. My focus was on safety, engagement, and participation. - Kayak / MTB
I served as one of the subject teachers, taking responsibility for the students and ensuring their safety during kayaking and mountain biking activities. - AFS Program
I was a mentor for AFS exchange students who stayed at REC for approximately one month. We hosted four different international groups over the year, and I was responsible for welcoming them, organizing activities, supporting their AFS projects, and facilitating intercultural exchange. - Full Host Trips
I accompanied the Full Host international students (from countries like Mexico, Germany, and the UK) on various trips across Denmark and Europe. These students, unlike AFS participants, stayed at the school during breaks, so we organized cultural excursions and experiences for them while other students were home. - Culture Trip & Ski Trip
In addition to Full Host trips, I joined two major travels: a two-week Culture Trip to Malaysia and a Ski Trip to Sweden. I took on the role of an additional adult supervisor, assisting with logistics, safety checks, and general student welfare during travel. - Evening Duties & School Events
I was on weekly duty every Wednesday from 17:00 to 23:00, covering quiet hour, dinner, evening activities, and night rounds—just like the other teachers. Naturally, I also helped out during events at the school and when activities took place in whatever they needed.
MY PROJECT:
My project consists of a Scrap Book covering all that has happened during this year. With both personal and more professional experiences and reflections, I tried to make a physical product that would allow me to reflect and take the time to sit down and really think about all that I have done and learned throughout this very intense year.
I wanted to appreciate how much I have learned this year and “celebrate” the many challenges and unforgettable moments I’ve experienced.
I was hired as a full time teacher in Ranum Efterskole College, meaning I will stay at the school but with a very different role next year. This past year has been intense, rewarding, challenging, and full of growth. It pushed me, shaped me, and prepared me for whatever comes next.
I have to admit, I thought putting this Scrap Book together would take less time! Going through all the photos, selecting the right ones, designing the pages, adjusting sizes, multiple trips to the printer—and a lot of cutting and pasting—ended up being a bigger task than expected.
Still, it turned out to be a beautiful way to reflect on everything I’ve experienced and how much my life has changed since I arrived in Ranum last August.
