As part of my solidarity contribution during my ESC volunteering journey, I led a cultural activity where I introduced students to a unique and inspiring part of my community in Gaza: a local association for the deaf.
This center is not only a place for education but also a space where people with hearing disabilities create beautiful handmade products—from woodwork and pottery to embroidery, clothing, and even food projects. It’s a place full of talent, creativity, and resilience.
Since I was volunteering in an Efterskole, I found that the concept of this deaf school in Gaza (Atfaluna) is quite similar to that of Blåkilde Efterskole—but for the deaf. Both are safe spaces where young people can grow, learn, and express themselves freely within a strong community.
During the session, I shared my personal volunteering experience with the association, where I spent years supporting events, organizing activities, and learning Palestinian Sign Language. I also talked about the challenges and strengths of the deaf community in Gaza, and how they continue to thrive despite the difficult circumstances.
To make the activity more interactive and engaging, I taught the students some basic signs in Palestinian Sign Language, like how to introduce themselves and express simple phrases & of course I taught them my favorite signs of course, which is (love)🤟 and (peace)✌️ . It was a joyful moment of cultural exchange, where hands became a bridge between languages, communities, and experiences.
This activity sparked curiosity and empathy among the students , and I was proud to bring a small but meaningful part of Gaza to Denmark.
Gaza is a place full of strength, creativity, and an unbreakable spirit. Despite the many hardships we face, people in Gaza continue to rise with hope in their hearts and a deep love for life. Even in the darkest times, they find ways to create beauty, build community, and dream of a better tomorrow.
